The Doug of Edwards: Standards
© 2010 Lisa Bernstein (Lisa B)

He had found a cadence,
a voice to call listeners to the music
and I like others was invited
to step along with him, to enter the tide
of air across the airwaves, the phone line,
the moment of his onstage introduction
and then listen and sing and play
as the music we made floated out
to the world buoyed
by Doug’s support. He was ready to serve
in the army of The Music,
to push off the boat from the shore, sound a 21-gun salute
and then stand there laughing as we sped out.
And he always made the phone call to welcome us home,
to find out more about the trip of the
tones, the jones to scat the next passage, the new poem.

I’m very sorry to learn that Doug Edwards passed away. I didn’t know that. He was a good man.

From: Nancy McKay, Mills College

To: Lyvonne Chrisman, Co-Founder, Friends of Negro Spirituals:

Re: Doug Edwards

“I’m so sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. I remember Doug so fondly when Sam and I appeared on his KPFA program. He was a real pro broadcaster and I was awed by how well he timed things and handled the music and the sound controls. Doug has left a wonderful legacy, and thanks to you for  capturing it via the oral history. This points out the importance of doing oral history.”

“The world has lost one of the best human beings I have known. Doug gave us Irish an extraordinary welcome  to his show and his community in the Bay Area, and made us feel we were like family. Witty, articulate, spiritual, searching, couragous, fun, outspoken on all things effecting human/civil rights and injustice, his roots in his own culture gave him the openess to other cultures and the artistic expression. He taught us the personal can become universal, by expressing  and sharing eachother’s cultures. It is then we have a sense of belonging.  He made us feel we belonged here.  I was honoured to be on his show, but also felt it was a privilege to interview him for my own radio show, Jazz on the Bay, for Ireland’s National broadcasting station RTE Radio 1.   We will miss you Doug…we won’t see your like again.”

What a wonderful presence we have lost! And with such an ear.
I was charmed by him and his deep respect for jazz.

THE TERRIFIC TWOS” -A LIVE BROADCAST IN THE KPFA PERFORMANCE STUDIO

FEATURING:  RICK VANDIVIER AND TERRENCE BREWER

Terrence Brewer

Along with media and radio chart success (Brewer’s latest album ‘Groovin Wes’ reached #9 on the JazzWeek national radio charts in April 2009), Jazz guitarist Terrence Brewer spent 2009 performing to sold-out crowds at the 52nd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, the world famous Yoshi’s at Jack London Square, and SFJAZZ’s HotPlate Concert Series. Brewer also had the pleasure opening for vocalist/pianist Diana Krall during her N. California run at Mountain Winery. Other noted performances include Dr. Anthony Brown, Pete Escovedo, Dave Ellis, and guitar legend Calvin Keyes.

Groovin’ Wes (2009, Strong Brew Music), a Wes Montgomery tribute project and the fourth album from Jazz guitarist Terrence Brewer, debuted March 2nd on the JazzWeek national radio chart at #18 and quickly began to climb, settling into the Top 10 a few weeks later. Brewer’s music is getting attention throughout the states, receiving reviews in JazzTimes and Billboard while Brewer has been honored with awards including the SF Weekly Music Award for ‘Best Jazz Artist’, Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce ‘Artist of the Year’ and the Bay Area Blues Society ‘Best Jazz Group’ award.

Rick Vandivier

Rick Vandivier is a guitarist who has found inspiration in influences that stretch from Andres Segovia to Pat Metheny to Jimi Hendrix. His performances are daring, soulful, and evocative. In a recent concert review, Jean Bartlett (Pacifica Tribune) wrote: “the amazing guitar licks provided by Vandivier cultivated a whole new threshold of wow… Vandivier opened the show with a piece which galloped the triumphant poetry of Madrid while caressing the edges of Segovia, Feliciano and Montoya. Extraordinary musicianship with plenty of sweets…” Rick has been performing and recording in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1979. In addition to his extensive work with vocalist Nate Pruitt in Primary Colors, Rick has been active in numerous other projects as a guitarist and composer, including leading his own ensemble which has recently attracted a new level of attention and popularity.

Khalil Shaheed

Trumpet-Flugelhorn player, recording artist, producer, composer, educator, program director, and bandleader. Khalil has enjoyed performing and teaching jazz music while designing and recording hybrids of jazz, funk, R&B and blues for over thirty years. A Chicago native, who started playing professionally while still in High School, Khalil has over forty years of professional playing experience. An audition in 1968 for the Buddy Miles Band became a six-year gig that took him on national and international tours and led to the recording of five albums with Buddy.

It was during this time as well that Khalil forged a friendship with Jimi Hendrix whom he met through Buddy Miles. There were numerous recordings with Jimi, one of which has recently been released by Martin Scorcese. With solid ties to both the Jazz and R&B communities Khalil has had the opportunity to play and/or record with numerous great musicians such as his mentor Billy Higgins, Woody Shaw, John Handy, Taj Mahal, Ed Kelly, Ndugu Chancelor, Jimi Hendrix, Sonny Simmons, Rachael Ferrell, Ledisi, Clark Terry, Marlo Henderson, Randy Crawford, Ernie Watts, George Bohanon, Oscar Brashear, Tootie Heath and others.
Khalil was also featured as jazz soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Morgan. He continues to work as consultant for the San Francisco Symphony’s Aim Program, Stanford Jazz Workshop, and the San Jose Jazz Society. In 1994 Khalil founded the Oaktown Jazz Workshops, a non-profit jazz education organization dealing with youth between the ages of 10 and 18 years teaching them performance and about the history of America’s Classical Music Jazz.

Never one to be content Khalil is constantly looking for new musical adventures. He currently leads three bands, Mo’Rockin Project, Big Belly Blues Band (a 13 piece dance/party band), and the Khalil Shaheed Quintet.
